Movement, Recovery & Roller Derby: Building a Body-Care Routine That Keeps You Moving

Roller derby has been part of my life for years, and it has taught me a lot about movement, recovery, resilience, and community.

It has also taught me something much simpler:

Your body usually tells you when it needs attention.

Sometimes that happens after a hard practice.

Sometimes after a long hike, a workout, hours on your feet, or simply a busy week when you have not slowed down enough.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become less interested in “pushing through” everything and much more interested in building routines that help me keep doing the things I love.

For me, that includes movement, sleep, hydration, rest, body care, and paying attention before my body starts shouting.

That philosophy has shaped a lot of how we think about wellness at Urban Apothecary too.

Movement Is More Than Exercise

One of the things I love most about skating is that it reminds me movement does not have to look like a traditional workout.

Movement might be:

  • roller skating
  • hiking
  • strength training
  • walking with a friend
  • gardening
  • yoga
  • biking
  • dancing
  • stretching
  • simply getting outside

The best movement routine is often the one you genuinely enjoy enough to keep returning to.

For me, roller derby also brought something else that matters just as much:

community.

Some of my closest friendships and favorite experiences have come from skating, coaching, traveling, competing, and simply moving alongside other people.

That connection is part of wellness too.

Recovery Is Part of the Routine

Recovery is not what happens when you fail to work hard enough.

It is part of movement.

As we ask more from our bodies, giving them time and attention becomes increasingly important.

A simple recovery routine might include:

  • hydration
  • adequate food
  • sleep
  • gentle stretching
  • lighter movement days
  • warm baths
  • massage
  • topical body care
  • time away from training

You do not need to do all of those things every day.

The point is to notice what helps you feel ready to move again.

Why Topicals Fit Naturally Into an Active Routine

Topical products are easy to incorporate because they do not require a complicated routine.

A balm, stick, roller, or magnesium spray can simply live where you will actually use it:

  • beside your skates
  • in a gym bag
  • near the shower
  • next to your bed
  • at your desk
  • in your travel bag

That convenience matters.

At Urban Apothecary, our topical line grew partly from the realities of active people wanting practical body-care products they could keep within reach.

Some contain full-spectrum hemp.

Some are hemp-free.

The point is not that one ingredient fixes everything.

It is about creating a body-care ritual that fits the way you actually live.

Hemp-Infused Topicals

Some of our body-care products include full-spectrum hemp extract.

A full-spectrum extract contains CBD along with additional naturally occurring plant compounds from hemp.

That does not mean we should promise that a topical will treat an injury, eliminate pain, reduce inflammation, or speed healing.

Those are medical claims.

Instead, we look at hemp topicals as one option within a broader everyday body-care routine.

A Format for Different Kinds of Days

Different formats make sense at different times.

Sticks

A topical stick is one of the easiest formats for active people because it is portable and mess-free.

Our 4XL topical stick is one of the products customers frequently keep in gym bags, handbags, or beside the bed.

Rollers

Rollers offer a simple way to apply body-care oils to a more targeted area without getting product on your hands.

Magnesium Spray

Our Deep Relief Magnesium Spray is hemp-free and gives people another option when they want a lightweight spray as part of a post-movement or evening routine.

The best format is often the one you are most likely to actually use.

Do Not Ignore What Your Body Is Telling You

There is an important difference between everyday body care and treating an injury.

Persistent or significant pain, swelling, weakness, limited range of motion, numbness, suspected concussion, or an injury that is not improving deserves appropriate medical evaluation.

A balm or spray should never be used to mask something that needs professional attention.

That matters in roller derby, but it also matters for anyone who likes to stay active.

Taking care of your body sometimes means knowing when not to push through.

Movement Changes With Us

One thing I appreciate more now than when I first started skating is that movement does not have to stay the same throughout our lives.

There are seasons for competing hard.

There are seasons for coaching.

There are seasons for hiking, strength work, walking, skating recreationally, or simply getting outside more often.

The goal is not to prove that you can still do everything exactly the way you used to.

The goal is to keep finding ways to move that feel good, meaningful, and sustainable.

That is one of the biggest lessons sport has given me.

Community Is Part of Wellness Too

Roller derby gave me far more than a sport.

It gave me friends, community, opportunities to teach and coach, and another way to think about wellness.

There is something powerful about moving with other people.

You show up for practice.

You encourage each other.

You laugh.

You learn.

You get outside your own head for a while.

That may not come in a bottle or jar, but it absolutely belongs in the wellness conversation.

Start With What Keeps You Moving

You do not need a perfect recovery routine.

Start by asking:

What helps me keep doing the movement I enjoy?

Maybe it is:

  • better sleep
  • more hydration
  • strength work
  • stretching
  • a rest day
  • a warm bath
  • a topical body-care routine
  • moving with friends

Sometimes wellness is less about adding more and more things.

Sometimes it is about noticing what already helps.

Final Thought

Movement has been one of the most consistent threads in my own wellness journey.

So has learning when to slow down.

Roller derby taught me how strong the body can be.

Age, experience, and a few hard-earned lessons have taught me that taking care of that body matters just as much.

At Urban Apothecary, that is how we think about movement and recovery:

keep moving, listen to your body, and build simple rituals that help you come back to what you love.
