Immune Support (part one): Elderberry with a CBD Twist

It's that time of year again! The weather is turning, colds and flus are on the upswing. Keeping your immune system strong is more important than ever.

There are so many things you can do to boost your immune system naturally, from choosing healthy foods and getting great sleep to additional immune support (and recovery) through medicinal plants, herbs and mushrooms.

In this blog series, we will explore the benefits of these plant allies, share our favorite recipes and products to help you and your family stay healthy.

IMMUNE SUPPORT (PART ONE): ELDERBERRY WITH A CBD TWIST

Elderberry syrup is so popular this time of year, and for good reason. The delicious and immune-boosting combination of elderberry with its spice cabinet friends, ginger, cinnamon and clove offers much more support than used alone. And for a final twist, try adding CBD or CBD infused honey. (Scroll for recipe).

Elderberry: A Berry Good Choice Elderberries are high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, and phenolic acid. They've been used for thousands of years for their antiviral properties. They can support or boost the immune system when used daily as a preventative. They're also a great option for treating respiratory virus and can be taken up to six times a day during illness.

Ginger, Cinnamon, and Clove: Spice Cabinet Superheroes Ginger, cinnamon, and clove, commonly found in your spice cabinet, offer not only delightful flavors but also immune-boosting benefits. Ginger's anti-inflammatory properties, cinnamon's antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, and clove's antioxidant-rich, antibacterial nature all contribute to immune support.

Raw Honey: Buzzing with Immune Support Honey has been used for centuries for its potential health benefits including immune system support. While honey is not a miracle cure, it does offer several immune-boosting properties. Its antioxidants neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, which can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which can weaken the immune system. It has natural antimicrobial and antibacterial properties and contain enzymes and compounds that inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and microbes. Its soothing effects provide relief for a sore throat and cough.

CBD and Hemp: Harnessing Cannabinoid Potential The endocannabinoid system plays an important role in regulating immunity and scientists consider it to be one of the “gatekeepers” of the immune system. CBD plays a role in modulating the immune system by reducing inflammation and promoting immune system balance. It has antioxidant properties, helps with stress reduction and sleep.

By harnessing nature's immune allies and ensuring you are adopting healthy habits, you empower your body to stand resilient against illnesses, safeguarding your health and well-being year-round. Remember to consult with your healthcare professional before incorporating any new supplements into your regimen.

RECIPE: ELDERBERRY SYRUP WITH A CBD TWIST

Make your own elderberry syrup at home! It is great for daily use for immune support or taken several times a day during active colds and flus. Store in a lidded jar in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 months. Makes approximately 24 ounces.

Ingredients:

    • 3 cups water
    • 1 cup fresh or 1/2 cup dried organic elderberries
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon bark
    • 2 teaspoons minced (fresh or dried) ginger root
    • 3 whole cloves
    • 1 cup honey
    • Up to 500mg isolate or full spectrum CBD (optional)
Note: Using our CBD Infused honey will add 280mg full spectrum CBD

Directions:

  1. Combine water, elderberries, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves in a saucepan over medium heat; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes.
  2. Mash berries with a potato masher or fork to release it's juices. Strain the mixture, retaining juice and discarding remaining pulp. Let cool for 30 minutes.
  3. Stir in honey and CBD. Heat the mixture slightly to blend and infuse. NOTE: Once honey is added, use a thermometer to ensure the temperature does not exceed 110 degrees (F) to keep the honey's healing properties intact.
